A brief summary of the Fountain of the Sun water retention
basin proposed changes as derived from details presented
at the FOSA board meeting June 19, 2019.
This project description was described as a "pre-application"
submittal to the City of Mesa proposing to significantly change
the water retention basins, purportedly to improve drainage,
but it certainly seems more for the objective to build some
amenities desired by special interest groups.
Two water retention basins south of Pueblo Avenue between
80st Street and 79th Place: East basin is nearly 2.3-acres
and about 2.2 feet deep with storage capacity of almost 2.7
acre-feet. The west basin is about 2.3-acres and roughly 1.4 feet
deep to hold about 1.3 acre-feet. Both basins are currently
grass with some trees.
The FOSA board plans to re-grade and re-purpose these basins
in order to construct 4 pickle ball courts, a batting cage,
6 shuffle board courts, 2 bocce ball courts, a concession
and bathroom building, covered seating areas, a parking lot,
and remove the existing grass and replace it with non-grass
landscaping.
